Ice fishing Ashtabula

2/28/22

Pike have started biting near the island. Many people took advantage of the nice weather and started fishing with Tip ups. Smelt seemed to be the bait of choice. Perch are still being caught across the lake. White bass are being caught all across the lake, many people reported catching small mouth down around the dam. Fishing was slow around the crossing, Lots of people fishing and not much being caught. I suspect this was do to the nice weather and increased lake traffic. There was a lot of people on the lake this weekend. Walleyes are still being caught, again that magic first light hour and the last hour before dark have been best. Travel remains okay on the lake. There are a few snow drifts to be found around the lake. We will have to see what the weather brings this week.

Make sure to follow along on the Facebook Page.

Good fishing and tight lines!

Ashtabula Ice Fishing Report

2/19/2022

Ice fishing continues with lake travel becoming excellent. Wheeled houses are able to be moved on and off the lake very easy. The Crossing and Sundstrom’s Landing are providing excellent easy access. Perch are still being caught in good numbers. Seems smaller baits have been working best tipped with a wax worm. Size of perch has been smaller than average, but sorting will allow you good numbers of nice fish. Walleyes are continuing to bite, but mostly in the golden morning hour and golden afternoon hour. Larger rattle baits tipped with a minnow have produced the best fish, along with buckshots tipped with a minnow. Rattle reels have been very active during the evening hours. Small mouth bass have also become prolific. Seems as the ice gets later the small mouth have really started to bite. Don’t be surprised if you catch several nice fish!

Moving later into the year i suspect guys will start targeting larger pike in the shallows. If we can get past some of the brutal cold tip up fishing should be starting to turn on.

Weather this week is looking cold with many fronts moving through the area.

Good luck and tight lines!

February 1st 2022

Fishing over the weekend was a little bit slower than anticipated. I think that is partially due to the warm up and massive crowds seen on the lake. Talking with folks on the lake it seems most were able to catch some fish, not in huge numbers but the fishing was slow and steady.

Good numbers of walleyes were being caught in 8-10 feet of water, as well as some closer to the main channel. Lots of people were using tip ups with a minnow on Saturday and seemed to be doing well. White bass were also keeping people busy.

Perch numbers were low with a few people catching them here and there.

Access has improved on the lake with the recent weather and getting around without tracks is a lot more feasible. The crossing also has a plowed road allowing some access for people wanting to get ice castles on the lake farther north.

January 28th Fishing Report

Hello and welcome to FishAshtabula.com, this site is dedicated to providing realistic and up to date information about the lake and all things fishing.

Fishing this week has been above average. The walleye bite has been consistent with the break in the weather this week. Fish being reported are in the 15-20″ range and make for some great table fair. Some larger fish have been reported as well. Depths range from 6ft to 18ft of water on the flats. Don’t be afraid to try the shallow water!!! The best fishing has been during the golden morning hour and last half hour before its dark. Ripping raps and flashy spoons have been the ticket tipped with a minnow head. Dead sticks have also played a key part in the bite. Moving to the edges of the river channel once the sun is up has turned up some mid day bites as well. Don’t be afraid to drill holes! White bass have also been prevalent with the walleyes as well.

Perch have been spotty but are mostly being caught in the main channels. Most fish are smaller but with some patience you can sort through them and end up with a good size range of fish. We saw several fish in the 13″ range caught.

Ice conditions continue to be spotty. The slush has hardened but its still possible to find pockets. Travel has improved overall. Keep in mind that ice depth varies from 10″ to 24″ across the lake. No ice is safe ice, travel with caution.

Best of luck this weekend, The weather looks like it is going to straighten out for us.
